Polonaise carpets in the U.K.

Posted on 25 September 2015
We discussed the characteristics of the Polonaise carpets in a previous article, where we explain why they were mistakenly considered European rugs.

Despite not being European rugs, Polonaise carpets have a link to Europe, and United Kingdom as well. For example, a fragment of a Polonaise Carpet is displayed at the Victioria & Albert Musuem (London).

However, one particularly interesting historical fact is that the Persian King Shah Abbas I (the first of the Safavid Dynasty) gave some carpets to the English entrepreneur Sir Anthony Shirley in a move to impress him. Not only did he gift Sir Anthony fabulous handwoven silk carpets with gold and silver threads, but he also showcased them in a memorable presentation with six mules each carrying four carpets!
